Arianespace Readies for the Sixth Ariane 5 Launch in 2009

The next Ariane 5 mission has moved into its final preparation phase as the vehicle for this sixth flight of 2009 is delivered to Arianespace . Following its rollout from the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building in French Guiana - where the vehicle's basic build-up was performed by prime contractor EADS Astrium Space Transportation - the Ariane 5 ECA was transferred to the Final Assembly Building, where its dual payload will be installed under Arianespace responsibility.

The mission is scheduled for liftoff late this month, carrying SES WORLD SKIES' NSS-12 spacecraft and THOR 6 for Telenor Satellite Broadcasting.

NSS-12 was manufactured by Space Systems/Loral based on the company's 1300 spacecraft platform and is designed to reach an estimated two-thirds of the world's population. As a replacement for NSS-703 at 57 deg. East, NSS-12 is to serve virtually the entire Eastern Hemisphere with its 40 C-band transponders and 48 Ku-band transponders, providing direct-to-home TV delivery power levels, as well as elaborate beam interconnectivity and C-/Ku-band cross-strapping.

Its direct-to-home coverage will be handled through four regional Ku-band spot beams covering the Middle East and Europe, Central and South Asia and - for the first time - East Africa. NSS-12's high-capacity, high-power C-band hemispheric beams are configured for Europe, Africa (including Mauritius) and the Middle East, as well as an area stretching across Asia to Australia.

They will be augmented by a powerful C-band global beam that reaches from the United Kingdom to the Far East.

The second payload for Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission is THOR 6, which is to deliver high-power direct-to-home television services from the 1 deg.

West orbital position. This relay platform will strengthen Telenor Satellite Broadcasting's television broadcast coverage over Central and Eastern Europe, while also providing additional capacity in the Nordic region.

THOR 6 is fitted 36 Ku-band transponders - 16 of which will serve the Nordic countries, while the 20 other transponders will provide capacity for the growing broadcasting demands within Central and Eastern Europe. It is based on Thales Alenia Space's Spacebus 4000B2 spacecraft design.

SES-Astra unveils more HD+ details

SES-Astra has unveiled more details on its German language consumer website about the HD+ service which launches on November 1.

The operator expects that the service will be available to owners of CI Plus modules from the first quarter of next year, when the right CAMs will become available. This will make HD+ reception possible for owners of integrated TV sets and satellite receivers equipped for CI Plus. The modules will come with the HD+ smart card (Nagravision encryption).

Single smart cards will only be available from the third quarter of next year.

The website also says that for the moment HD+ will only be marketed in Germany, not in Austria or Switzerland.

With the current Sky Deutschland receivers it is for the moment not possible to also receive the HD+ bouquet, “but talks are going on to find an attractive solution.”

HD+ cards will cost €50 for the 12-month period; SES-Astra says it will not increase the price when more broadcasters will join the platform.

Belgian RTBF plans closure of international channel

The Belgian French language public broadcaster RTBF has said that in order to save money it will close its international channel RTBF Sat and replace it with a new service to be called RTBF La Trois (3).

However, the replacement channel will only be distributed nationally and no longer be available to an international audience. Until now, RTBF Sat was distributed unencrypted via the Eutelsat Hot Bird with a mix of programming from the two national channels. No date for the switch-off has been announced.

RTBF La Trois will concentrate on programming for young viewers and will also bring a selection of movies in their original version with subtitles in French. There will be no advertising on the new channel, which will be distributed via the DTT network, cable and IPTV platforms in the country. It seems likely that the Belgian French language DTH platform TeleSat will also acquire the distribution rights to the new channel.

Magyar Televizio selects Eutelsat’s Eurobird™ 9A satellite for broadcasting across Europe

Eutelsat Communications, in a consortium assembling Magyar Telekom and eVision, has been selected by Hungary’s national public broadcaster, Magyar Televizio (MTV), to broadcast its Magyar TV2 channel across Europe using the Eurobird™ 9A satellite. The flagship general entertainment channel is now available on a free-to-air basis in both Standard Digital and High-Definition versions.

The multi-year contract was signed by Hungary’s national public broadcaster following an open public procurement procedure, with official broadcasts launched on 21 September. Within the framework of the consortium servicing MTV’s requirements, Magyar Telekom manages terrestrial activities, including fibre delivery of the broadcast signals to eVision’s teleport in Budapest. The signals are multiplexed and uplinked by e-Vision to one transponder on Eutelsat’s Eurobird™ 9A satellite for reception by satellite homes and terrestrial operators in Hungary and across Europe.

The arrival of Magyar TV2 on Eurobird™ 9A adds a new boost to the Hungarian and HD content available from Eutelsat’s 9 degrees East neighbourhood, where the number of channels has almost doubled over the last 12 months to 245. Magyar TV2 notably joins Hungary’s Hello HD, Europe’s first all HD platform, which launched from Eurobird™ 9A in 2008. Within an overall dynamic of HD take-up, which saw Eutelsat this month break the barrier of 100 HD channels, Eurobird™ 9A, with 28 channels, is the Group’s second-largest neighbourhood for HD content.

Kayser rebuffs critics of HD+ platform

IFA 2009 – Berlin. Ferdinand Kayser, the president and CEO of SES-Astra, has given details of the new HD+ platform during a keynote at the consumer electronics show in Berlin. Rebuffing criticism to the plan for the encrypted HD service, he said existing HD receivers with CI slots will be able to receive the new platform.

“There was no need to spread panic.” The HD+ platform will launch on November 1 with two channels from the RTL Group, RTL and Vox. Early next year, the ProSiebenSat.1 group will follow with three channels – ProSieben, Sat.1 and Kabel eins.

Six manufacturers have announced they will deliver receivers. All new ones will come with a prepaid card for 12 months of viewing, after which a fee will be payable for access to the “technical infrastructure”. Kayser said this is not pay-TV.

HD+ will also be available on television sets with integrated satellite tuners and CI Plus, as well as set-top bxes ready for CI Plus. “The HD+ logo on new receivers that come onto the market in autumn will show to consumers: with this device, you are able to receive all HD free-TV content including the encrypted HD+ content. Purchasing an HD+ receiver will include an HD+ smart card allowing the reception of HD+ free of charge during the first 12 months. [---] The German consumer protection was very worried and warned that existing HD receivers would not receive HD+. Their warning was baseless, their panic unnecessary. We developed a solution for existing HD receivers which are not yet HD+ receivers and which can be upgraded for HD+. This is possible by the means of a special CI module which can be introduced in the Common Interface slot of existing HD receivers.

Kayser also answered critics, who claim HD+ is pay TV. “HD+ is free-TV. It is very amazing to see the confusion that some people create in the industry and public around the concepts of pay-TV and free-TV. Free-TV is financed by advertising or public fees, pay-TV by subscriptions. The fact that a free-TV channel, financed by advertising or public fees, is encrypted, does not mean that is becomes a pay-TV channel. Cable TV, for example, is also not pay-TV just because the access to the cable costs money. The same applies to public TV for which you have to pay a fee. And the same principle applies to HD+: the annual cost that we are planning is a service fee, a yearly one-off which is related to the reception of the offer and not to specific content, parts or packages of the offer.”

Meanwhile, Nagravision has officially announced it will be the CA system for the HD + platform, as reported many months ago by Broadband TV News.

First HD+ receivers to hit the shops

The first five HD+ receivers will hit German retail outlets before the end of the year. Three manufacturers – Technisat, Technotrend and Humax – are ready to deliver the sets, which have an integrated HD+ card reader.

Manufacturers are to rush the sets to the shops in order to meet the November 1st deadline, when the first broadcasts on the HD+ platform on Astra will start with two channels – the main RTL HD channel and Vox HD – from the RTL Group.

HD+ is the new platform launched by SES-Astra to accommodate HD simulcasts of commercial broadcasters. For the moment, only the German speaking market is targeted, with RTL starting broadcasts this year and being followed by three channels from ProSiebenSat.1 in January next year.

The five models that will be available are the Technisat Digit HD8+, Humax HD Fox and iCord HD+ as well as theTechnotrend Micro S835 HD+ and Select S845 HD+, according to information obtained by the German news site Digital Fernsehen.

According to SES-Astra, a number of manufacturers will make firmware updates available to enable a selected number of legacy HD receivers fitted out with a CI slot compatible with the HD+ platform.

MTV and DSF might join HD+

MTV Networks Germany and the sports broadcaster DSF are talking to SES Astra about joining the HD+ platform for the German speaking market, according to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The HD+ platform is set for launch on November 1 with two channels from the RTL Group, RTL HD and Vox HD. Three channels will follow them from ProSiebenSat.1 in January next year. HD+ is the new platform launched by SES-Astra to accommodate HD simulcasts of commercial broadcasters.

There is already a pan-European MTV HD channel available, which could benefit from further distribution on HD+; as yet there is no HD version available from DSF. Other German private broadcasters are also said to be in discussions about joining the platform.

The first five HD+ receivers will hit German retail outlets before the end of the year. Three manufacturers – Technisat, Technotrend and Humax – are ready to deliver the sets, which have an integrated HD+ card reader.

SES Astra reveals HD+ pricing details

SES Astra has confirmed the November 1 launch of its new HD platform HD+ and said viewers will receive the first 12 months for free.

Everyone who buys an HD+ certified receiver will receive a smart card with 12 months of viewing. After the free period, consumers may be able to extend the validity of the card for €50 per year. This may be done via a dedicated web site, in retail or using a special HD+ hotline. Viewers may also buy a new smart card.

Three manufacturers – Humax, Technisat, Videoweb and Technotrend – will have HD+ certified receivers in the shops before year’s end (See also Broadband TV News passim). SES Astra has also said receivers which have CI Plus capability will be compatible with the platform. This includes TV sets with CI Plus slot from manufacturers including Loewe, Metz, Samsung and Sony.

On November 1, RTL and Vox will start their HD broadcasts on the HD+ platform, to be following in January by Sat.1, ProSieben and kabel eins. SES-Astra emphasised reception of other HD channels including ARD, ZDF and Arte, will also be possible with the HD+ receivers without the need of an active smart card.

Hungary’s MTV seals Eutelsat deal

Hungary’s main public broadcaster Magyar Televizió (MTV) has begun to transmit its second channel MTV2 free-to-air (FTA) in HD and SD on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 9A satellite.

This follows the creation of a consortium bringing together the Hungarian incumbent telco Magyar Telekom, teleport operator e-Vision and Eutelsat and signing of a multi-year contract by MTV following an open public procurement procedure.

MTV2 joins Hungary’s Hello HD satellite platform at the Eutelsat 9 degree East neighbourhood, where the number of channels has almost doubled to 245 over the lasst 12 months.

Controversy hits Polish DTH platform

Poland’s TVP has taken the unusual step of re-encrypting four channels – TVP1, TVP2, TV Sport and TVP HD – it unscrambled for the launch of its much-publicised DTH platform on September 15.

The move, which has been greeted with a mixture of surprise and disbelief throughout the Polish TV industry, flies against the whole strategy of the new platform, which was to start with a five-channel FTA offer (TVP Info apparently remains unencrypted), add four more FTA channels (Polsat, Polsat 2, TVN and TVN 7) in December and then pay channels, offered to viewers on an à la carte basis.

If the VideoGuard encryption is maintained, all viewers will be required to purchase the PLN 50 smart card to enjoy reception of two of the country’s most popular channels.

Launching the DTH platform was one of the last actions of TVP’s former president Piotr Farfal, who has been replaced by Boguslaw Szwedo and a new management team.

South Africa’s eNews expands reach

South Africa’s first independent 24-hour news channel eNews has launched on DStv’s premium and basic bouquets in Southern Africa. The broadcaster has also plans to start a pan-African news channel.

Following a distribution agreement with DStv, the news channel now also reaches Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Malawi. e.tv’s CEO Marcel Golding said in a statement, “This is a significant expansion for the eNews Channel into Africa and means that Southern Africa now has access to a new independent news service from the African continent.

“Following the successful launch of the eNews channel in South Africa on June 1, 2008, the news service has grown to be the most watched news channel on the DStv Bouquet. This success shows that Africans want to watch an African based news service.”

E.tv, the owner of the channel, also has plans for a new continental news service for Africa, which will be named eNews Africa. It will operate as a sister channel to the eNews Channel, with the same approach to news, but with slightly different programme construction, scheduling and presentation, in order to adjust to an African audience, according to local reports.

TVR secures more satellite capacity

Globecast has signed a deal with Eutelsat securing an additional transponder for Romania’s TVR.

The 16 degrees East slot, already used by TVR, will enable the public broadcaster to increase signal quality for digital and HD services, as well as to launch more channels.

TVR already distributes TVR International, the national channels TVR1, TVR2 and TV3, TVR HD and a number of regional and thematic services from 16 degrees East.

More HD for Skylink

The news was given by Jaromir Glisnik, the MD of TradeTec, in an extensive interview with Digizone.

However, he added that HBO HD would not be one of these channels.

In the interview, Glisnik also said that Skylink is planning radical changes to the way it offers channels, the introduction of à la carte options being one possibility.

Kabelkiosk completes Eurobird switchover

The German headend-in-the-sky service Eutelsat Kabelkiosk completed the switchover to the Eurobird 9A satellite at 9 degrees East this week in order to serve more than 250 business partners.

At the same time, the Kabelkiosk feeds on Eutelsat at 8 degrees West were terminated. During the past few months, thousands of cable headends from the small to medium sized cable nets that Kabelkiosk serves were realigned to the new position.

“We can now continue our growth strategy,” said Martine Rutenbeck, CEO of the Eutelsat visAVision GmbH. On the Eurobid 9A satellite, Kabelkiosk can profit from the 38 available transponders, as compared with the 20 transponders on the old position.

At the moment, Kabelkiosk offers more than 120 channels, but plans to increase the offer with HD channels and VOD services.

Kuwait Projects Co (KIPCO) has announced it is to merge its Showtime Arabia joint venture with the Orbit Group.

“This deal is all about consolidation. First, it brings together two great brands in one company to offer customers the very best in Western and Arabic entertainment,” said KIPCO vice chairman Faisal al Ayyar. “KIPCO and Orbit were pioneers of the region’s pay-TV market and we’ve both been calling for a consolidation of the market for some time. So, joining forces in this way is good news for customers, staff and the local TV industry.”

Samir Abdulhadi, President and CEO of Orbit Group, added: “This unprecedented merger is great news for the industry and customers alike, because it consolidates two leading pay-TV platforms, brings together the best channel line-up under one operator and combines all customer service and distribution networks into a single point of call”

No financial terms were disclosed, though the deal is said to be a 50/50 venture between the new partners. KIPCO owns 73% of Showtime Arabia with the remainder held by the US Viacom Group. Previously KIPCO had said it was talking with potential partners and in 2006 had announced an IPO, but later postponed the plan following a downturn in Arab financial markets.

Showtime is believed to have in the region of 220,000 subscribers, while Orbit is said to have just over 90,000.

The new venture will be headed by Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, the current Showtime CEO, who has previously been head of Canal+ in the Nordic region and launched Fox Kids.

New subscribers will benefit from a new package that goes live on August 1 and includes 70 exclusive channels. Ahead will be decisions on platforms and technology. Showtime broadcasts from Nilesat (seven degrees West) with Irdeto conditional access and OpenTV middleware, while Orbit is on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 2 (25.5 degrees East), currently with a mix of MediaGuard and Irdeto CA and the MediaHighway middleware.

Showtime goes into Orbit

The first changes have been made to the programming line up of the newly merged Showtime and Orbit pay-TV platforms in the Middle East. Five premium channels from the Showtime bouquet; Showmovies 1, Showseries, Showcomedy, Showsports 3 and E! Entertainment have been made available to Orbit subscribers, while Showtime viewers will be able to watch Super Movies, America Plus and Super Comedy from the Orbit bouquet.

The new channels are being added on a temporary basis while the management team led by Showtime’s Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, CEO of the newly merged pay-TV platform, decide on the final line-up. “We promised maximum entertainment, great value for money and simplicity of choice for TV viewers across the region. By taking immediate steps to give current Showtime and Orbit viewers not only the best but everything that Hollywood has to offer, this should leave viewers in no doubt that the merger is good news for them.”

Orbit customers will benefit from an expanded line-up of top movie titles and the addition of the English Premier League from the start of the new season.

UPC Direct goes One West

UPC’s direct-to-home operation, UPC Direct, is to switch to Telenor’s One West satellite position from its present Astra berth.

UPC Direct has signed a long-term lease with Telenor Satellite Broadcasting for an initial seven transponders at one degree West spread between the Thor 5 and Thor 6 satellites. Thor 5 was launched in February 2008 while Thor 6 is set for launch in Q4 2009.

UPC Direct, serving Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, will begin migrating its 329,300 subscribers across to One West in the late spring of 2010.

“Telenor already has an established position within the region and it gives us an obvious and advantageous consolidation capability for UPC Direct as well as Focus Sat,” said Gene Musselman, president and COO of UPC Broadband.

The seven transponders in the agreement are in addition to the three already used by the 155,400-subscriber Romanian operation Focus Sat, fully acquired by UPC in 2006. Five transponders are currently held on Astra, with additional channels brought into the package through the Simulcrypt system.

In total, Telenor reaches some two million homes in Central and East Europe. Cato Halsaa, VP and CEO of Telenor Satellite Broadcasting, said the new contract would significantly increase the operator’s digital reach. “This is a positive development in strengthening our long standing relationship with UPC, which, over the years has grown through the success of Focus Sat in Romania. We look forward to continuing working with UPC Direct and developing their broadcasting requirements within this region”.

Although the deal has been on the cards for many months, Broadband TV News understands that the final contract was only signed at 16.00 on Wednesday afternoon.

A spokesman for SES said the operator continued to have confidence in the strong dynamics of the Central and East European markets: “These five transponders will help us to meet current demand and customer requests for capacity at our prime orbital position,” he said. “This capacity will serve the existing and expected future demand from both standard and high definition digital TV in our Western European key markets and further underpins the growth dynamics in this market.”

SES has been looking to reduce the number of transponders on Astra at 19 degrees East occupied by operators serving smaller markets in favour of more lucrative clients targeting Germany, France and Spain. However, while the plan may be to encourage the use of its 23.5 degrees East position, with the need to transfer subscribers whatever satellite is chosen, rival satellite providers have been able to turn heads.

The departure of UPC Direct does not represent a loss to SES of the Czech and Slovak markets. Astra’s 23.5 East orbital slot is home to the Skylink and CS Link packages that between them have close to one million homes.

Serbia Broadband boosts capacity

Serbia Broadband (SBB) has secured additional capacity for its DTH platform Total TV from Eutelsat, signing long-term contracts for two transponders at 16 degrees East.

At the same time, it has agreed long-term extensions for two transponders it has used since 2006. Total TV will use the new capacity to launch a number of new channels including Cinemax 2, MGM, Discovery ID and two services from Pink Media Company.

They will be uplinked from SBB’s teleport in Belgrade and one operated by STN near the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana.

German Free TV Group joins HD+ platform

ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG will broadcast its three main channels, Sat.1, ProSieben and kabel eins, in HD versions as part of the new HD+ platform on Astra at 19.2 degrees East. The three channels from the German Free TV Group will join Vox and RTL from RTL Germany from January 2010.

The addition of the channels will bring the total number in the HD+ platform to five. The move also implies that a number of major German public and commercial channels will be available in HD from January 2010 onwards. At that time, pubcasters ARD and ZDF will also take up regular HD broadcasts of their main channels.

At the moment, Arte HD and Annixe HD are already available as free-to-air channels on the Astra satellite; Sky Deutschland also has seven HD channels on air. It is not clear if the Sky certified boxes will also be able to receive the HD+ platform channels, but Broadband TV News believes talks are ongoing to make the two platforms compatible.

Markus Payer, spokesperson for SES-Astra, told Broadband TV News: “We like to have our HD+ platform as open as possible for all parties; content owners and manufacturers. Content owners want to have as wide a reach as possible and manufacturers want to make attractive products and in the end it is the consumer who decides.”

“The fact that we are now able to offer our three channels via HD+ is a milestone in terms of our technology and quality offering for our viewers. The HD+ offer is coming at exactly the right time for us. Meanwhile there are more than 13 million HD-ready flat screen TVs in households, which means that viewers can enjoy our HD content in its entirety,” said Andreas Bartl, MD, German Free TV Group, ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, in a statement.

“With the transmission of our programmes in HD quality we are pushing digitalisation in Germany. We will now focus on developing new content and offers for this new standard,” said Dr Marcus Englert, director new media & diversification of ProSiebenSat1 Media AG, also in a statement.

Receivers for the HD+ platform will be available this autumn, with manufacturers expected to show the first models at this year’s IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

The HD+ platform will use the Nagravision CA system, and pre-paid smart cards will be made available with a 12 month credit. Cards can be updated using a variety of methods.

EchoStar expands in Poland

The leading Polish DTH platform Cyfrowy Polsat has begun to use a new EchoStar HD receiver.

According to Satkurier, it is the EchoStar DSB-7200 HD and is being made available to the platform’s subscribers for PLN199 (€45.5) to buy or for a one-off rental fee of PLN99.

Cyfrowy Polsat also plans to introduce the EchoStar DVR-7400 HD receiver this autumn.

CS Link to change CA system

he Czech DTH platform CS Link plans to start trialling Irdeto conditional access later this year, according to Daniel Klicka, the director of Media Vision.

Speaking to Parabola, he added that the platform plans to eventually switch from CryptoWorks, the system it is currently using.

Irdeto purchased the CryptoWorks system as part of its acquisition of the Philips CryptoTec division in February 2006. It has subsequently begun to look at migrating customers to the latest version of the Irdeto technology.

Klicka also said that Media Vision, the operator of CS Link, has recently seen an ownership change. While 60% of the company is still owned the Dutch company SP D Corporation, the remaining 40% has been acquired by GES Media Asset from individual shareholders.

Although CS Link recently introduced HD to its offer, Klicka was non-committal as to the company’s HD plans other than to say more channels would eventually be added.

A dedicated bouquet for Sudan on Arabsat

Arabsat says it is teaming up with the Sudanese Radio & TV Corporation to launch and operate a satellite DTH platform in Khartoum, Sudan.

The Sudanese Radio & TV will upgrade its Om Durman Station 2 uplink to be ready for the new Arabsat platform and prepare it for operation by the end of this year. The new platform will be broadcast from the Badr satellite at 26 degrees East.

Arabsat CEO Khalid Balkheyour said in a statement: “This platform will enable all the Sudanese channels that are currently being transmitted from outside Sudan, to be transmitted from Sudan within one Sudani bouquet. This will also yield a reduction in operational costs while benefiting from Arabsat full coverage of Sudan through Arabsat Badr satellites on its exclusive orbital position at 26 degrees East”.
